Ultrasonographic and radionuclide detection of hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotics with low alpha-fetoprotein levels

1984

A total of 67 cirrhotic patients with clinically suspected neoplastic degeneration and low alpha-fetoprotein levels were assessed prospectively with ultrasound and gold (198Au) scintigraphy. Ultrasound showed space-occupying lesions in 22 of the 24 patients who had a final diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (sensitivity, 95.8%) and excluded the presence of HCC in 37 of the 43 patients with cirrhosis only (specificity, 86.0%; efficiency, 90.8%). Scintigraphy demonstrated a cold defect in 22 of the 24 patients who had a final diagnosis of HCC (sensitivity, 95.8%) and excluded the presence of HCC in 22 of the 43 patients with cirrhosis only (specificity, 51.1%; efficiency, 69.8%). It …

Long-term analysis (1863–2002) of environmental change in the Capo Feto area (Mediterranean sea)

2004

The area of Capo Feto represents one of the few remaining salt-marshy zones in Sicily. It lies within a site of importance for the Community (defined as a “sito di importanza comunitaria” (SIC)), which also includes Margi Spanò and Margi Milo. The Capo Feto and Margi Spanò marshlands have also been identified by the Ministry for the Environment as an area deserving special protection (“zona a protezione speciale” (ZPS)). Moreover, in 1999, 150 ha of the Capo Feto area were included in a project for environmental rehabilitation as part of the European Union “Life-Nature 2000” programme (Comitato Tecnico-Scientifico Area di Capo Feto, 1997). Prior to this, the area had become somewhat degrade…

Selective Transarterial Chemoembolization of Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinomas: A Reasonable Palliative Option

2008

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to provide information concerning the performance of selective transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) as a palliative treatment in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), also in the case of multifocal lesions. Patients and methods We reviewed prospectively collected data on 43 patients with cirrhosis and HCC who underwent selective TACE as a palliative treatment. Patients were assigned to one of two groups: (1) those with one to three HCC lesions, and (2) those with four or more HCC lesions. Results One hundred and two TACE sessions were applied in 43 patients. There were 39 men and 4 women with a mean age of 65.5 ± 8.273 years. Alpha…

On the occurrence of Phallocryptus spinosus (Milne-Edwards, 1840) in Sicily (Crustacea, Branchiopoda)

2023

The distribution, status, and phenology of the anostracan Phallocryptus spinosus in Sicily are described. The only population of the species to date known to occur with certainty on the island inhabits a few temporary water bodies located within the Natura2000 site “ITA010006 - Paludi di Capo Feto e Margi Spanò”. In these sites, the species co-occurs with an interesting halophilous flora and crustacean fauna. Based on available data, the concentration of dissolved salts in the water bodies seems to be the main driver of the life histories of the co-existing populations of the anostracans Artemia salina and Phallocryptus spinosus.

29 y 30 CC. Pese a…

Oral mucosa symptoms, signs and lesions, in end stage renal disease and non-end stage renal disease diabetic patients

2006

Aim: To assess oral signs, symptoms and oral lesions (OL) type and prevalence, in diabetic patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD DM), and compare them with analogous findings in a non-ESRD DM group; analyze the possible association between oral manifestations, as well as with relevant laboratory findings. Research design. Two adult groups were studied: Group A: ESRD DM on dialysis, and group B: non-ESRD DM (serum creatinine <2.0 mg/dl). Known DM evolution time, dialysis treatment type and duration, and laboratory results were recorded. An oral exam was performed, searching for signs, symptoms and ESRD-associated OL. Associations were analyzed using Chi square, Fisher?s exact test, and…
